Scugog Council approved a grant for up to $30,000 to support critical façade restoration for the property located at 179–191 Queen Street in Port Perry.
A township statement said Scugog continues to invest in the preservation and vitality of its historic downtown with council’s approval of a Heritage Conservation District (HCD) Grant.
The landmark commercial building was originally constructed in 1884.
The project will include repointing the masonry, selective brick replacement with historically appropriate materials, and preservation of original architectural details, helping to maintain the building’s authentic character.
While the 2026 HCD Grant budget has already been fully committed to two other projects, the township said it is leveraging unused 2025 capital funding to support this restoration. Council approved an exception to provide up to $30,000, recognizing both the building’s significance and the applicant’s prior engagement with the program.
The restoration project also addresses structural concerns, including loose and deteriorating bricks caused by weathering and freeze-thaw cycles. Completing the work will help stabilize the building and maintain public safety, while preserving a key piece of Scugog’s architectural heritage.
Work is expected to be completed this year, with efforts made to minimize disruption during the peak summer tourism season.
2026 grant recipients include:
Meta4 Gallery (200 Queen Street) – exterior foundation waterproofing
Port Perry United Church (294 Queen Street) – restoration of heritage features
