Township of Scugog yesterday announced that the council has authorized a maximum of 2 per cent increase in taxes in the 2022 budget.
“Scugog Council approved a budget target of not more than 2% over last year’s total property tax bill,” said a township tweet.
The final budget recommendations will be presented to council with the operating budget in the new year.
Following are the tax guidance for 2022 budget for:
- Clarington 4%
- Whitby 2%
- Oshawa 1.78%
A Scugog statement said out of all the property taxes residents pay the government each year, municipal taxes make up only 9 per cent of the total amount. Of that 9 per cent, the township receives 3 per cent from overall taxes to operate and plan for services and infrastructure that residents use everyday.
Capital Budget: The Capital budget outlines Scugog’s plan for long-term projects. Examples of capital expenses may include:
- Infrastructure development, building and construction projects (e.g. building new roads, bridges and sidewalks)
- Park and greenspace improvements
- Fleet expansion and maintenance (e.g. purchasing new fire trucks and snow plows)
Operating Budget: The Operating budget outlines our spending plan for the upcoming year. This includes the day-to-day costs of running:
- Fire and Emergency services
- Township Facilities (e.g. Scugog Arena, Blackstock Recreation Complex, Birdseye Aquatic Facility, Scugog Public Library, Scugog Shores Museum and Town Hall)
- Recreation programs
- Road maintenance
- By-law enforcement
- Debt payments and transfers to reserves
