Shut-and-open: Day camp registration closed, reopened

It was an open-shut-and-open case as the Town of Ajax yesterday said it closed registration for children’s day camps, only to reopen it again.

Ajax – like Oshawa and Clarington – had announced day camps for parents who needed childcare in the event of school closures due to strike by Ontario education workers.

“To help offset the impact, we will be offering November Camp Days to Ajax residents beginning Monday, November 7,” said an earlier town announcement.

In an update later, the town said “November Camp Days have been closed for registration as school boards announce the transition to remote learning starting Monday, November 7. Please stay tuned to this post for additional updates if the situation changes. Thank you.”

However, in a further update, the Town of Ajax said: “The November Camp Day for Monday, November 7 has re-opened for registration to help offset the impact to Ajax residents as parents transition to virtual learning. Please stay tuned to this post for additional updates if the situation changes. Thank you.”

Until Friday November 11

The camps were to run till Friday November 11 from 8 am – 5pm at the Ajax Community Centre & McLean Community Centre. They were open to children aged 4-12years. The cost was mentioned at $47 per Camp Day.

Programming will allow for flexibility so participants can be dropped off any time after 8am and picked up any time before 5pm. Participants must bring peanut free am/pm snacks, a lunch and water bottle for each November Camp Day, said the announcement.

It asked residents to note that if schools remain open or transition to remote learning, full refunds will be provided to registered participants to the method of payment used to register. If required, more camp days will be added.
