Smell of weed in car leads officers to this handgun

Durham Police said a male is in custody after a firearm and drugs were located in his vehicle during a traffic stop in Whitby.

On Wednesday, August 7, at about 11:30 pm, members of Central West Division initiated a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle while conducting proactive patrol in the area of Dundas Street West and Halls Road North.

While speaking with the driver, officers smelt a heavy odour of cannabis coming from the vehicle which resulted in the vehicle being searched. A loaded handgun with a prohibited extended magazine was located under the driver’s seat, in addition to a large amount of cannabis in the rear of the vehicle, said police.

The driver was taken into custody without incident. The man, age 41 from Clarington was charged and held for a bail hearing. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.
