Snow clearing crews working long and hard to clear roads

Muncipalities across Durham are still clearing the snow, with crews on duty since early morning today.

Clarington said it initiated another full callout of staff at 4 am this morning. “Today, crews will focus on the urban areas of Bowmanville, Courtice, Newcastle and Orono, cleaning up snow from any areas that weren’t completed in yesterday’s operation. Crews will also begin clearing excess snow from courts, starting with Courtice,” said the statement.

Friday night’s winter storm dumped up to 30 cm of snow on the region, and driverways are looking like small valleys with high snowbankson either side.

Safety reminders

  • If you are physically able, clear snow and ice from around your hydrant to allow firefighters easy access to the area during an emergency.
  • To prevent flooding, residents are encouraged to clear snow and ice from on-street catch basins in front of their homes.
  • With possible, isolated utility outages, residents are encouraged to have an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight. Get started on preparing your emergency plan and kit.

Parking reminders

  • Ensure all vehicles are off the road to allow for snow-clearing operations.
  • Temporary parking passes and on-street parking permits are not valid during a snow event or for the duration of the cleanup.
  • If you park on the street during a snow event, your vehicle may be ticketed or towed.
