The Town of Ajax yesterday clarified that though its overall 2023 budget had increased by 9.55 per cent, the rise in the portion of its own property tax is just 3 per cent.
“What residents will see is an expected 3 [per cent] increase on the town’s portion of the property tax bill,” said the town in clarification to a published external report.
“This will result in a $13.74 increase per month (based on the average assessed home of $491,600),” it added.
The town said the 9.55 per cent figure (originally used in the article) is the town’s budget increase, and not what the residents will see on their property tax bill (a combination of Town, Region, and provincial education taxes).
The combined total will be known on March 29, when Regional Council approves their budget, it said.
The Region of Durham has proposed a 5 per cet cap on this year’s tax increase.
Ajax said the town is committed to ensuring responsible budget increases by prioritizing financial stability, service improvements, and core infrastructure investments.
Whitby, Oshawa, Brock and Clarington
Whitby has approved a 5.8 per cent hike, Oshawa a 4.98 per cent increase, Clarington a 4.06 per cent rise, and Brock a 3.2 per cent increase.
