Spring weight restrictions on Durham roads end

The Regional Municipality of Durham and local area municipalities lifted weight restrictions on roads from April 24.

They restrict the operation of motor vehicles on designated roads during the spring weight restriction season, as per the Highway Traffic Act and Regional By-law 26-2018.

This affects vehicles that are heavier than 5,000 kilograms or five tonnes per axle. The final day of the Regional Municipality of Durham 2023 Weight Restriction season was April 23.

Signs will be removed from regional roads where these weight restrictions no longer apply, however please note that some roads may have year-round weight restrictions applied. For more information, please refer to durham.ca/WeightRestrictions, said a regional statement

Weight restrictions are needed to prevent damage to roads. In the spring, frozen roads start to thaw making the pavement on some roads temporarily lose strength and become unable to support vehicles heavier than 5,000 kilograms or five tonnes per axle.

Weight restrictions for local area municipality roads may differ from Durham Region. Contact your local area municipality for details on their weight restrictions, the region said.

Weight restriction on regional roads begins March 1
