Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has seized two guns during two separate traffic stops this week.
“These two incidents remind us of the dangers our officers face every time they conduct a traffic stop, and that no traffic stop is routine. One of the firearms was located by a member of the Summer RIDE program during a check,” said a DRPS statement.
It said a male is in custody after a loaded firearm and prohibited ammunition were located in his vehicle during a traffic stop in Pickering.
On Friday, August 2, at about 1:35 am, a member of the DRPS RIDE team initiated a traffic stop while conducting proactive patrol in the area of Dillingham Road and Brock Road. A check of the driver’s documents confirmed that he was a suspended driver and his vehicle was required to be impounded.
Officers searched the contents of the vehicle and located a loaded handgun hidden near the steering column as well as an extended magazine with prohibited ammunition in the rear of the vehicle. The driver was taken into custody without incident.
He was held for a bail hearing. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.
A 22-year-old male from Brampton and a 30-year-old male of no fixed address, from another incident, are facing multiple charges. Both were in violation of court mandated bail conditions from a previous incident.
Since July 1, DRPS front-line officers have seized six guns – four of these guns were located during four separate proactive traffic stops. As a result of these gun seizures, seven people are facing charges – five of those individuals were in violation of court mandated bail conditions from previous incidents.
Editor’s Note: Durham Post does not name or identify the accused as:
1. Of this time, they are suspect[s] and not convicted by a court, and
2. Sometimes charges are amended or dropped.
