The Town of Ajax is encouraging residents to take part in an upcoming community town hall focused on the troubling disappearance of Black boys in Durham Region and across the Greater Toronto Area.
The event, titled The Unseen: Town Hall Meeting on the Durham Missing Black Boys, is being hosted by the Durham Family and Cultural Centre (DFCC) in partnership with the Ajax Anti-Racism Task Force (AARTF). The meeting will take place on Thursday, May 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Carruthers Marsh Pavilion, 55 Ashbury Blvd., Ajax. Registration is required to attend.
According to the Town of Ajax, the town hall is intended to serve as a safe, solutions-focused forum to raise awareness, amplify lived experiences, and connect attendees with community resources. It will also provide an opportunity to engage directly with frontline advocates working in the areas of prevention, justice, and community support.
“This important community meeting brings us together with compassion, urgency, and purpose,” said Chantelle Vermon, Co-Chair of the Ajax Anti-Racism Task Force. “Across Durham and beyond, Black boys are disproportionately affected by systemic barriers that lead to school disengagement, mental health challenges and increased vulnerability to exploitation.”
Attendees can expect real stories from impacted families and community members, a panel of local advocates, youth leaders and service providers, and resources tailored for parents, guardians, and youth. Light refreshments will be provided.
