Transit strike looms as Durham buses may stop late tonight

Durham Region Transit (DRT) said it will end all scheduled bus service by 11 pm today (Friday, June 6), in anticipation of a potential strike by Unifor Local 222, which represents frontline transit workers.

The union will be in a legal strike position as of 12:01 am on Saturday, June 7.

The region is advising transit users to check the list of last trips at DurhamRegionTransit.com/updates and make alternate travel arrangements if needed.

Although a strike has not been confirmed, DRT is preparing for the possibility of service disruption. If a strike does not occur, regular bus service will resume on Saturday, June 7.

The early service shutdown on Friday evening will affect all DRT bus routes across Durham. According to Durham Region, this step is being taken to safely prepare for a potential work stoppage beginning at midnight.

Collective bargaining between DRT and Unifor Local 222 has been ongoing since March 31, but the parties have not reached a new agreement.
