Hate crime has been rising in southern Durham in recent months with the latest being yet another Islamophobic attack reported in Ajax.
Town Mayor Shaun Collier has condemned the assault on an Ajax mosque leader.
“Ajax Council stands in firm solidarity with the Ajax mosque leader who was assaulted by a visitor to their masjid this past weekend. We are saddened by the incident and condemn all acts of violence in our community. Places of worship are sanctuaries of care, belonging, and spiritual grounding. Everyone in Ajax deserves to feel safe, especially in the spaces that offer them comfort and peace,” said Mayor Collier.
It was not revealed if the police are investigating the assault.
Late March, an Islamophobic attack at Ajax Public Library (see below) shocked the region during which a woman attacked a headscarf-wearing Muslim woman and tried to set her hijab on fire.
Islamophobic vandalism has been reported in recent months from the sleepy village of Orono in Clarington to Whitby.
There have also been incidents of antisemitic vandalism and graffiti in southern Durham.
Hate incidents have been rising since the start of the ongoing war in the Middle East.
