Eleanor Doney, 83, named as victim of boy’s attack

Durham Regional Police have identified the victim in last Thursday’s Pickering homicide as 83-year-old Eleanor Doney.

“We want to express our gratitude to the community for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. We especially want to thank the first responders for all of their efforts. We take comfort in the fact that she was a woman of strong Christian faith,” said her family in a released statement.

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) also extended their sincere gratitude to community members for their cooperation in providing information and video related to the circumstances of this tragic event. Investigators continue to appeal to anyone who may have information—even if it seems insignificant—to come forward.

Police have identified the accused as a 14-year-old male from Pickering. As a reminder, under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, it is illegal to share photos or identifying information about young offenders. Sharing such material is a criminal offence. Police ask the public to submit any videos to investigators and use social media as a space to honour Eleanor’s memory.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Barrette at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5412 or D/Cst. Hilliard of the Homicide Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5413.
