June is Recreation and Parks Month (JRPM), and the Durham Region Health Department, in partnership with region municipalities and Durham Tourism, is again launching the JRPM Passport Adventure—an initiative designed to encourage residents to stay active, connect with their communities, and enjoy a variety of free events across the region.
Now in its second year, the passport adventure features returning favourites such as public swimming, yoga by the lake, and Zumba classes, along with new activities including baseball, horseshoes, netball, and rollerblading/skating. Residents are encouraged to attend at least three free events throughout the month to qualify for a grand prize draw for a new bicycle—an ideal reward for exploring Durham’s scenic trails.
The JRPM Passport can be downloaded digitally at durhamtourism.ca/RecAndParksMonth, where a full calendar of events is also available. To enter the draw, participants must scan a unique QR code at three different events using their passport. Children and youth 17 and under will need parental permission to participate.
Tara Wheeler, a public health nurse with Durham Region Health Department, noted the broader value of the initiative:
“Recreation and Parks Month is a wonderful opportunity for residents to connect with their community and embrace healthy, active living. We’re thrilled to collaborate with local municipalities and Durham Tourism to promote a wide range of activities for everyone. Last year, many community members took part in the passport adventure, and we’re excited to offer even more this year with several new events. Be sure to download your passport today.”
