Video: Police chase 19-year-old would-be carjacker

Durham police have arrested a 19-year-old man following an attempted armed carjacking in Ajax.

According to police, the incident occurred around 1 pm on Sunday, June 1, near Salem Road and Williamson Drive East. The victim was sitting in his vehicle in a residential driveway when he was approached by a man who allegedly pulled a weapon from his waistband and demanded the car.

The victim quickly drove away from the scene and was not physically harmed.

Police say the suspect fled before officers arrived. A coordinated search was launched by members of West Division, K9 officers, the Tactical Support Unit, and Air1. The police helicopter located a suspicious individual nearby and guided ground units to the location.

After a brief foot chase, the suspect was taken into custody. A knife believed to have been used in the attempted carjacking was recovered during the arrest.

A 19-year-old male, of Ajax was charged, police did not say whether the suspect was held for bail or released for an undertaking. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.
