Hate-motivated mischief comes to sleepy town of Orono

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after seven vehicles were targeted and vandalized at a mosque in Orono.

This is the second anti-Muslim incident in days after hate graffiti was found in Whitby. Hate incidents across southern Durham have been erupting since the start of the current war in the Middle East (see below).

On Saturday, May 24 at about 10:30 pm, members from East Division responded to reports of hate-motivated incidents at 111 Church St North in Orono. Information was received that several vehicles were vandalized, as well as the front door of the mosque.

“We are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have dashcam, CCTV, or cellphone footage from the area around the time of the incident, to please come forward. Witnesses can contact investigators directly or anonymously through Crime Stoppers,” said the police.

“We are aware of the deep concern and distress this incident has caused, particularly within our Muslim community. We understand the fear and anxiety such events can create, and we want to reassure everyone that we are taking this matter seriously. Our investigation is ongoing, and we are working closely with community leaders to provide support and ensure that all residents feel safe. We stand firmly against hate and discrimination in all forms and remain committed to protecting every member of our community,” police added.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact Detective Constable Chesson of the East Division Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520 at ext. 1613.
