17-year-old faces arson charge after string of vehicle fires

Durham Regional Police have charged a 17-year-old Toronto male in connection with a series of vehicle fires in Whitby and Oshawa earlier this year.

According to police, the first incident occurred on Monday, February 17, around 7:40 pm, when officers from Central West Division responded to a fire call near Hopkins Street and Nichol Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found multiple vehicles ablaze. Whitby Fire Services extinguished the fires. No injuries were reported.

A week later, on Monday, February 24 at about 1:30 am, officers were dispatched to a second scene in Oshawa, near Kentucky Derby Way and Britannia Avenue West, where a tow truck had been deliberately set on fire. Again, no injuries were reported.

Following an investigation, police arrested a 17-year-old male from Toronto, who is now facing a charge of arson. He was held for a bail hearing.

Durham police say the investigation is ongoing as they work to identify any additional suspects involved.
