Police probe anti-Muslim graffiti in Whitby, call for community tips

Durham Regional Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect involved in multiple hate-motivated graffiti incidents that occurred early Tuesday morning.

On May 20, officers from Central West Division responded to several locations in Whitby where offensive graffiti had been reported. Police say the language used in the vandalism is deeply offensive and has had a significant impact on the local Muslim community. The graffiti has since been removed, and the investigation remains ongoing with support from the DRPS Hate Crime Unit.

Investigators are requesting video footage — including security camera or dashcam footage — from the following locations and times:

  • Between 2:00 am and 3:00 am on Thickson Road South, between Consumers Drive and Dundas Street East
  • Between 4:00 am and 5:00 am on Dundas Street, between Hopkins Street and Annes Street

The suspect is described as a male with a slim build, last seen wearing a dark-coloured jacket and pants.

In a statement, Durham Regional Police emphasized their commitment to addressing hate in the community: “We do not tolerate hate speech or hate-motivated crimes in our community. Acts of hatred and discrimination have no place in our region.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Central West Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1805.
