The Township of Uxbridge, has announced two new tree planting projects that will use the Miyawaki method to create densely planted urban forests.
The projects build on the success of Durham Region’s first Miyawaki-style mini forest, which was installed at the Fields of Uxbridge in 2024.
A mini forest is a compact, densely planted area — about the size of a tennis court — made up of native trees and shrubs. A pocket forest is smaller still, typically fitting within the space of a few parking stalls. These fast-growing green spaces are known for their ability to sequester carbon dioxide up to 30 times more efficiently and support significantly greater biodiversity compared to conventional plantings.
According to the Township, the first new project will see three pocket forests installed at King Street Parkette (233 King Street West). The second will expand the original planting site with a new mini forest adjacent to the existing one at the Fields of Uxbridge (335 Durham Regional Road 1).
Site preparation for the King Street Parkette is scheduled for June 21, and July 5, for the Fields of Uxbridge Phase Two site. Preparation involves laying down cardboard, compost, and mulch to condition the soil before tree planting begins in the fall.
Tree planting dates are tentatively scheduled for October 25, at King Street Parkette and November 1, at the Fields of Uxbridge.
The Township is encouraging residents to get involved. Those interested in volunteering can register online for each preparation event through the following links:
