Two men held for shooting at birds with a ‘long’ gun

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) said they have arrested two men following reports of shooting in public areas in the Town of Whitby.

On Sunday, December 15 at about 2 pm, members of Central West Division responded to the area of Water Street in Whitby after receiving reports of an armed person. Information was being updated that there were two males armed with a long gun, shooting at birds. The area the males were shooting includes open public spaces and pedestrian paths, police said.

Officers arrived on scene and located two males in possession of a long gun. Both males were taken into custody.

A 20-year-old male from Whitby and a 31-year-old male from Scarborough were arrested and charged with Careless Use of a Firearm. The firearm was seized by police.

They were released on an undertaking.

Police said the Ministry of Natural Resources has been notified.
