Up to 20cm of snow forecast from Thursday to Friday

Environment Canada this morning issued a special weather statement for Durham region, forecasting heavy and blowing snow from Thursday afternoon into Friday.

It said total snowfall could amount to 20 cm by Friday afternoon.

Total snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 cm by Friday morning. Local amounts up to 20 cm will be possible over the higher terrain north of Lake Ontario, said the alert.

It warned drivers of reduced visibility in snow and blowing snow, leading to hazardous travel conditions, especially for the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes. “Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve” it advised.

Environment Canada said a strong low pressure system is expected to affect southern Ontario later this week. “Snow is expected to begin over the area Thursday afternoon and become heavy at times. Total snowfall amounts of 15 cm are expected. Higher snowfall amounts exceeding 15 cm are possible, however, confidence in this occurring is low. Lesser snowfall amounts are expected near Lake Ontario where snow may transition to rain. Snow will gradually taper to flurries Friday morning.”
