Uxbridge asked to repurpose land to shelter homeless

North House, a charity, has urged the Township of Uxbridge to consider repurposing town-owned properties to create a shelter for those who have no place to live.

It has also asked council to create a committee to examine the need for affordable housing in Uxbridge.

North House said Covid-19, the tornado and rising costs are increasing the number of individuals who cannot afford to live in the community.

Presenting statistics and facts about poverty and homelessness in North Durham and from Uxbridge specifically, North House advocated for more rental and affordable housing in Uxbridge.

It mentioned options such as:

  • Shelter
  • Transitional Housing
  • Permanent Housing
    ○ Community Land Trust
    ○ Tiny Homes
    ○ Designated number of affordable units for new builds

Council requested regular reports from North Durham and referred the housing matter to Development Services.

Uxbridge Council also supported a request by the Salvation Army in principle to allow displaced residents [from the storm] to live in mobile trailers while repairs were made to homes.
