The Township of Uxbridge has announced that construction has begun on the new Aquatic and Sports Complex as of this week.
The township statement did not mention the project cost or where funding will be sourced from.
The works, when complete, are projected to deliver the modern, year-round recreation facility. During this first phase of construction, the existing pool remains open as usual for residents, said a township statement.
The new aquatic centre is replacing North Durham’s only indoor pool at 1 Parkside Drive in Uxbridge, it said.
The new facility will feature an eight-lane, 25-metre pool for swimming and fitness, a 10-by-15-metre therapy and teaching pool and a multi-sport space designed for basketball, pickleball and fitness programming.
Residents can expect to see increased activity at the township’s construction site as crews begin installing the building’s structural arches.
Current project timeline:
- Phase one: New Aquatic Centre to open in the Spring 2027.
- Demolition of old pool in March 2027
- Phase two: Construction of the gymnasium to start in the Spring of 2027
- New Gymnasium to open in the Summer of 2027
The new facility will feature corrosion-resistant aluminum substructures from Sprung Structures, engineered for long-term durability and performance in extreme weather conditions, including heavy snow loads, seismic activity, and hurricane-force winds. Its airtight design will improve energy efficiency, reducing heating and cooling demands compared to conventional buildings.
Altogether, the facility is on time and on track with the projected budget and expected to have a lifespan of approximately 50 years.
To Close in Phase 2
Throughout Phase 1 of construction the current UxPool will remain open for public swimming, lessons, and aquatic programs. The existing facility is anticipated to close in March 2027 to allow for Phase 2 construction to begin. At that time, the existing facility will be demolished to make way for the new gymnasium.
While there may be a brief period when neither facility is in operation, the township said it is committed to minimizing the duration of this closure and reducing the impact on users as much as possible. Until then, residents are encouraged to continue enjoying the current pool and take their last lap, celebrating the many memories it has created over the past five decades.
