Vandalism at Ed Broadbent Park, Garden of Human Rights

Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter said he was disheartened by $25,000 damage to Ed Broadbent Waterfront Park and Garden of Human Rights.

He will issue a more detailed media statement on Monday, June 19 regarding recent vandalism and significant damages to the park and Garden of Human Rights.

Officially opened two weeks ago with Ed Broadbent in attendance, there have been two significant incidents of vandalism at the park and garden. At this time, initial estimates to repair the damages is in excess of $25,000.

Among the facilities damaged are understood to be the lights that lit up the signage.

Ed Broadbent Waterfront Park features an amphitheatre, stage and seating; a network of concrete and asphalt pathways; connections to trails; green spaces; and a Garden of Human Rights (photo above).

The naming of the park honours long-time former Oshawa MP and NDP national leader Ed Broadbent. The park recognizes the many contributions Broadbent made to public service and to Canadians, and in particular to his commitment and service to the residents, workers and businesses of Oshawa. The Garden of Human Rights honours Broadbent’s dedication and extensive work as a champion and advocate for human rights.
