Weekend home ice skating party busted

Last weekend an ice-skating gathering at a home in Whitby was busted by Durham Police officers for violation of Covid-19 related social gathering order.

On Sunday, January 10, Central West Division officers investigated a complaint about a gathering at a Whitby residence. A group of 12 children and coaches were using a backyard ice rink with parents gathering to watch. Parties on scene were not engaging in social distancing and exceeded the outdoor limit of 10 people, at the time.

As a result of the investigation, officers issued the homeowner a Part 3 Summons for ‘Any person hosting or organizing a public event or gathering exceeding the number permitted under section 7.0.2 order (O.Reg 421/20)’ Contrary to the Reopening Ontario Act, Section 10.1(1)(a).

The outdoor limit has now changed to five people and masks are required when distancing is not possible with the new Stay-at-Home regulations recently announced.

The police reminded that the Ontario government declared a state of emergency and issued a stay-at-home order beginning Thursday, January 14. This order and other new public health restrictions include: only gathering indoors with members of your own household; outdoor gatherings will be limited to 5 people; and masks should be worn when physical distancing is not possible, even when outside.

The DRPS said it will continue enforcing non-compliance in partnership with Durham Public Health and local by-law, issuing tickets when necessary. Those found in violation could face a fine.
