A wheel came off a vehicle on Highway 401 and struck a passing vehicle in Clarington, while in Whitby; two suffered serious injuries following a head-on collision.
On Friday, July 17, at around 2:15 pm, members of Central West Division responded to a two-vehicle collision in the area of Lake Ridge Road and Highway 407.
A Hyundai SUV was travelling southbound on Lake Ridge Road near Highway 407 while a Mitsubishi SUV was exiting the Highway 407 off-ramp.
The Mitsubishi SUV appeared to enter the intersection, causing the Hyundai SUV to veer out of its lane, resulting in a head-on collision with a Dodge minivan travelling northbound on Lake Ridge Road.
The 24-year-old driver of the Hyundai SUV suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre.
A 77-year-old passenger in the Dodge minivan suffered critical but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre.
The third 69-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local area hospital.
Members of the DRPS Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene to conduct an investigation. The roads in the area were closed for several hours.

Wheel-off on Highway 401
In east Clarington, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said a vehicle traveling on Highway 401 eastbound lost a wheel. The highway was closed between Mill Street and Newtonville Road.
The eastbound vehicle lost a wheel assembly, which crossed into the westbound lanes and struck a passing vehicle.
The two occupants in the westbound vehicle, both sustained non life-threatening threatening injuries and were transported to hospital. The driver of the westbound vehicle was 70-years old.
The driver of eastbound vehicle has been charged because of the detached part from his vehicle.
