Construction of a gated driveway access at Camp 30 Cafeteria lands needs to begin soon — or a provincial grant may be in impacted.
“The Ontario Trillium Fund (OTF) contract concludes at the end of October 2025, with the final report due December 1,” Marilyn Morawetz, Chair of Jury Lands Foundation (JLF), told Durham Post. JLF, a not-for-profit organization, has been dedicated to preserving the historic World War II Camp 30 site.
The OTF grant provides funding for events including a speaker series, movie nights and a community picnic/market. The speaker series has been ongoing since April at the Sarah Jane Williams Heritage Centre and the movie nights are at the Visual Arts Centre, but the OTF grant requires some events to be held on site.
“The access will enable Jury Lands Foundation (JLF) to host public events on the property with support from a $80,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant,” said an earlier Clarington statement (see below).
Works Schedule
The planned gated driveway access is to be constructed this fall through the donation of materials and in-kind contributions from local contractors.
Clarington Council has approved all recent reports, said a municipal statement. “The municipality is supporting though necessary approvals and staff supports,” said a spokesperson.
“The accessway supported by council recently, will be installed with JLF having secured materials and services from donations. Through the generosity of local businesses, no funding will be requested of council for construction materials or labour donations,” added the JLF Chair Morawetz.
Municipal Access
Future municipal access to the site will be via a new entrance from Lambs Road to match the future road alignment as approved in Official Plan Amendment 121. The municipal access will not require the use of Kaitlin’s easement.
