Durham Region’s contractor started work on the removal of the existing Beaver River bridge in Brock from the last week of July.
Elirpa Construction and Materials Ltd., mobilized to the site on July 8. Installation of the traffic protection, erosion and sediment control measures, access to the river, and river protection system (floating interlocking barges) has been completed, said a region update.
The bridge has been close since November on safety concerns.
The Region of Durham is currently designing temporary and permanent replacements of the Beaver River Bridge, located on Regional Road 15 east of Highway 12, in the Township of Brock in Beaverton.
The existing bridge will be replaced with a new structure and is scheduled to commence construction in 2026 and be completed in 2027. In the interim, a temporary bridge is tentatively scheduled to be opened to traffic in the fall of 2024.
“Right now the overwhelming goal is to have the temporary bridge open to traffic and pedestrians within the two-month time frame. The region is still waiting on numerous approvals from outside organizations, not within our control but they are coming very quickly, said Mike Jubb, Brock Deputy Mayor and Regional Councillor.
The region said all the appropriate approvals for the bridge removal are in place including from: Transport Canada Navigation Protection; Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO); Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA); and, Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO). The Region appreciates the support of all our partners for their timely approvals to complete this important project for the community.
Funding for this project is being provided by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario.
