Driver falls ill, garbage truck drives across properties

A medical episode led to a garbage truck driving into a ditch and across numerous properties before coming to a stop on Monday in Clarington.

On January 25 at about 2:30 pm, East Division officers were called to a motor vehicle collision involving injuries near the intersection of Courtice Road and Holyrod Drive in Courtice. A dump truck was travelling southbound on Courtice Road when it left the roadway, entered a shallow ditch, drove across several residential driveways and damaged some hydro wires before coming back onto the roadway and stopping. The vehicle struck several large rocks, a small tree and smashed through a residential fence, said police.

The 66-year-old driver was undergoing a medical episode and emergency responders safely removed him from the truck and rushed him to a local hospital. He was later transferred to a Toronto area trauma centre and is expected to survive.

The roadway was closed for over an hour for the investigation. The garbage truck was damaged and was towed away. Charges are not anticipated.

Anyone with new information about this investigation is asked to contact Cst. Harkness of East Division at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2056.
