Durham Regional Council has approved nearly $500,000 in funding for local non-profit organizations to help combat the rise in poverty, address social inequalities, promote wellness and support communities to thrive.
The announcement comes at a time when the latest data shows at least 1,871 people are experiencing homelessness in Durham, according to Chair of Region’s Health and Social Services Committee and Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy.
This number is up 130 per cent from 811 in August last year and reflects only those who are registered with the Region of Durham.
The region’s investment comes via the Thriving Communities Fund, within the Community Social Investment Program (CSIP).
Organizations will use this funding for operational and/or capacity-building activities that will strengthen their ability to deliver programs and services to residents, said a statement.
The following organizations are recipients of this year’s Thriving Communities Fund:
- Ajax Public Library
- Back Door Mission
- Club Optimiste Francophone de Durham
- Community Living Ajax-Pickering and Whitby
- Durham Alliance Outreach
- Durham Black Educators’ Network
- Durham Outlook for the Needy
- Ignite Durham Learning Foundation

Stella Danos-Papaconstantinou, Commissioner of Social Services said “The non-profit sector supports residents of all ages and stages of life, and are key to growing strong resilient, communities. By supporting these organizations, we are building a stronger Durham Region.”
