MP Jennifer O’Connell announced the funding

$593,000 federal grant for Fields of Uxbridge, Sandford

The Township of Uxbridge has received a $500,000 grant from the federal government for the Fields of Uxbridge to improve accessibility, safety, and year-round user experience of the recreation site.

The grant, awarded as part of the Federal Tourism Relief fund, serves to create conditions for local economies to rebound by supporting the tourism sector.

Upgrades and improvements include:

  • Paving a new parking lot and installing parking lot lighting;
  • Landscaping improvements including new accessible paths;
  • Addition of a port-o-let; and
  • Increased security through gates and fencing.

These new measures will increase user experience at the parks, ensure the protection of the facilities and its users, and help promote future events held at the site in the years to come, said a township statement.

Grant for Sandford Community Centre

Uxbridge recently completed work to improve accessibility at the Sandford Community Centre by installing new accessible doors and upgrading the washrooms to a new accessible standard.

The project was made possible with an Enabling Accessibility Fund grant of $92,239 from the Federal Government. MP Jennifer O’Connell was on-site on August 29th to officially open the new washrooms and announce the funding.

“Accessibility is so incredibly important, and these improvements are a necessity for a busy place like the Sandford Community Centre.” stated Mayor Dave Barton. “I would like to thank MP O’Connell for her continued support and the federal government for the funding to help us improve accessibility.”

O’Connell, Member of Parliament for Pickering-Uxbridge, said: “Today I announced a $592,239 investment to the Township of Uxbridge for upgrades to the Fields of Uxbridge and Sandford Community Centre, which will create a better experience for visitors and residents alike. This investment makes sure that everyone can access and enjoy these wonderful spaces in our community.
This investment in the Fields of Uxbridge will include an additional 100 parking spaces that will also allow the township to explore the future expansion of the Trail Parking Project that, once implemented, will promote Downtown Uxbridge Businesses to tourists using the Uxbridge Trail network”.
