Port Perry residents has expressed fears over a recent decision regarding Port Perry Fairgrounds, which has been a mainstay destination for many events since 1910, including the annual fair that runs on Labour Day weekend.
“Recently the grounds have been threatened by a possible change in usage by the local town council,” said a statement released by concerned residents.
It said the Township of Scugog council and staff are wanting to conduct a vision exercise on the property now.
“Similar exercises in Collingwood added 2,200 units of housing on their site, sped up with an MZO (ministerial zoning order).
“There is a fear amongst many members of the community the same fate will befall the local fairgrounds,” said the statement.
To that end a local group has started a petition to protect the fairgrounds and preserve them as they have been for over a century.
Some 2,763 signatures have already been collected, with many comments from residents on the petition page: https://www.change.org/p/protect-port-perry-fairgrounds-community-petition
The petition, currently being circulated, calls on the Township of Scugog Council to:
- Protect the Port Perry Fairgrounds for continued use of community events – now and for the future.
- Keep these public lands PUBLIC: do NOT sell these lands for private development.
