Metrolinx, the operator of GO transit, says work is underway in Oshawa to prepare for the Bowmanville Extension of the Lakeshore East GO line, which will bring rail service nearly 20 kilometres east from the Durham College Oshawa GO Station to Bowmanville.
As part of the project, a new water main is being installed on Albert Street from Fisher Street to Albany Street, under the existing railway tracks, using trenchless installation. Starting in late August, Metrolinx’s contractor, BCP, began open trenching to connect the new water main into the existing system at Fisher Street and Albany Street.
The work is scheduled to take place between August 21 and September 30, primarily Monday to Friday between 7 am and 7 pm. While most construction is planned during the day, some overnight work may be required in the track zone. Hours may also shift due to weather or other unexpected issues.
Metrolinx advises that residents on Fisher Street and Albany Street will experience a temporary water shutdown during the tie-in process. Property owners affected will receive at least 48 hours’ notice. The transit operator encourages residents to store water in advance, complete household tasks ahead of time, and take precautions for any equipment that could be impacted.
Several road closures will also be in effect until September 30. Fisher Street will not be accessible through the bridge, and Albert Street west of the Albert Street bridge will be closed. Trucks and buses traveling from Simcoe Street onto Fisher Street may need to turn around on Celina Street.
Metrolinx says the Bowmanville Extension will connect Durham Region directly to the broader GO Transit network, aiming to reduce congestion in the Greater Golden Horseshoe while improving access to jobs, education, and entertainment.
