After Whitby, Oshawa announces new text message scam

On the heels of Whitby announcing a text message scam aimed at defrauding residents, the City of Oshawa yesterday announced another scam targeting its residents.

Be aware: Text message scam asking for payment of penalties, said an alert from Oshawa.

“The City of Oshawa has become aware that residents have received suspicious text messages asking for payment of outstanding penalties,” the city warned.

The City of Oshawa does not send text messages about parking violations, tickets or penalties of any kind. If you receive a text message of this nature, do not click on any links or provide personal information, it advised.

If you have questions about city communications regarding outstanding penalties, contact Service Oshawa at 905-436-3311 or service@oshawa.ca, the city said.

Whitby had warned its residents of a similar scam relating to payment of parking offences (see below).

Neither the Town of Whitby nor the City of Oshawa stated if Durham Police has been informed.
