Quick Facts

  • In 1941, Defence Industries Limited (DIL), the largest shell filling plant in the British Commonwealth, was located in this area to provide supplies for the Allies in World War II.
  • When thousands settled in the immediate area, a community developed and a post office was needed, which meant the area needed a name.
  • A competition among DIL employees resulted in the name Ajax being chosen in honour of one of the three ships that, in 1939, had engaged and defeated the German battleship Admiral Graf Spee at the Battle of the River Plate near Uruguay.
  • After the war, the community continued to grow and by the early 1950’s, Ajax was incorporated as a town (1955). Twenty years later, the small community of Pickering Village and parts of Pickering Township were amalgamated with Ajax, forming the town’s current boundaries.
  • Since 1958, most of Ajax’s streets have been named after veterans who served on HMS Ajax during WWII and those who served on the 8th HMS Ajax, which visited Oshawa Harbour in 1976.
  • Ajax is home to a total population of approximately 127,000 residents (2021 Statistics Canada Census of Population).
  • The Ajax waterfront is a popular spot to visit with seven kilometers of park land, which extends across the town’s southern border along the shores of Lake Ontario. Residents enjoy the scenic views, activities in the open spaces and the multi-use trail system. Key points along the way include Rotary Park, Lion’s Point, Veteran’s Point Garden, Paradise Park and Carruthers Marsh.
  • Ajax is known for its focus on active transportation – the 200 km trail system includes enhanced bike routes with markings reflecting the flora and fauna of the area. Most of the routes take approximately 20 minutes to complete by bike.
  • Greenwood Conservation Area is enjoyed by residents and visitors who explore 283 hectares of naturalized green space, nature trails, walking paths and playgrounds all year.
  • Pickering Village is Ajax’s historic main street, situated at the crossroads of Old Kingston Road and Church Street. The area is also home to the St. Francis Centre for Community, Arts and Culture, which is a theatre that provides arts and cultural events and experiences for residents and visitors.
