Ajax recognized for leadership in climate action plans

Non-profit organization, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), recently recognized Ajax’s leadership towards climate action by awarding the town an overall score of an A- for the 2023 response year.

The ‘A’ score for staff efforts was received based on Ajax demonstrating best practice standards across climate adaptation and mitigation, setting ambitious goals and making progress towards achieving those goals, such as:

  • In 2019, Ajax Council declared a climate emergency, and established new corporate GHG emission reduction targets in 2021, as well as joined the Cities Race to Zero Campaign.
  • These motions commit the Town of Ajax to reaching net zero GHG emissions by 2050.
  • The town will continue to implement and promote priority, GHG-reducing projects, such as the Durham Greener Homes Program, Ajax Green Standard and Ajax Green Fleet Strategy.
  • To continue to increase waste reduction and diversion in Ajax, the town continues to promote the Textile Diversion Program and the Corporate Ban on Single-Use Plastics.
  • The town hosts many events and programs, which provide engagement and education opportunities for the Ajax community (Ajax Green Living Days annual programming, which included a tree planting event at Greenwood Conservation Area, litter clean-up initiatives, a compost giveaway, virtual and in-person gardening workshops, expert-led webinars and more).

Ajax Council and staff continue to be committed to focusing on inclusive climate action and creating thriving and equitable communities for all.

“I am very pleased to hear that Ajax has achieved an ‘A’ score from Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). Although the hard work continues, on behalf of Ajax Council, congratulations to all staff in various departments that remain committed to achieving more equitable and sustainable communities and demonstrating strong leadership related to climate action,” said Mayor Shaun Collier.
