Applications open for Environmental Schools Grant

The City of Pickering is accepting applications for its Environmental Schools Grant, an initiative that offers financial support to help implement activities that contribute to a healthy environment.

Durham District School Board and Durham Catholic District School Board can each apply for up to $10,000 annually for their respective schools. The Ontario French Public School Board can apply for up to $1,000.

Examples of fundable projects include:

• Reducing waste (eliminating single use plastics)
• Encouraging active transportation (bike rack installation, bike/walk events)
• Helping birds, butterflies, and other species (providing habitat)
• Reducing energy use (equipping classrooms with energy monitors and auditing use)
• Greening school grounds (native and drought-resistant gardens, tree plantings)
• Growing for local food (indoor food growing towers, outdoor veggie boxes or garden beds)

“There are many inspiring ways to advance our environmental sustainability,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. “We look forward to supporting our youth as they contribute to the health of our community for today’s residents and generations to come. This initiative also helps foster discussion, collaboration and further environmental awareness between children and their parents, and ultimately throughout the entire community.”

Schools interested in applying can reach out to their respective school board or City staff to learn more about the application guidelines and upcoming deadline.
