Bridge works planned in Ajax and Pickering, may impact traffic

Bridge construction work is set to take place this year in both Ajax and Pickering, with projects focused on improving safety and accessibility along key routes.

Ajax Bridge

In Ajax, the town is moving ahead with plans to widen the existing Puckrin Bridge on Rossland Road, located between Salem Road and Rushworth Drive. The project, listed as T25003 Puckrin Bridge Widening, includes several key components:

  • Widening the bridge to the south side, including a new abutment wall
  • Building new retaining walls on the south side
  • Installing a new storm sewer and catchbasin on Rossland Road
  • Adding a sidewalk and parapet wall on the bridge’s north side
  • Constructing a multi-use path (MUP) and sidewalk on the south side
  • Slight realignment of the MUP access underneath the bridge
  • Site restoration, including driveways

Before construction begins, work will also be carried out on Range Line Road and Shoal Point Road. This includes marking underground utility locations, tree pruning and removal, sidewalk and driveway restoration, and a pre-construction condition survey of nearby homes. Homeowners will be contacted to schedule these voluntary surveys, which may help in the event of damage claims during construction.

The town says that during the work, the contractor will be responsible for maintaining safe and accessible walkways, driveways, and entryways. Temporary access disruptions will be communicated to affected residents, and on-street parking in the area will be limited.

Pickering Bridge

Meanwhile, in Pickering, Seventh Concession Road will be closed from Sideline 28 to Sideline 32, along with North Road from Seventh Concession Road to Highway 7, to accommodate the Wilson Bridge replacement project.

The City of Pickering has contracted Esposito Bros. Construction Ltd. (Tender No. T2025-2) to carry out the replacement. Work will include:

  • Removing and replacing the existing bridge
  • Road approach work and new asphalt paving
  • Installing guiderails
  • Drainage improvements
  • Full restoration of all construction-affected areas

The closure will be in place from June through to November. Detour signage will be installed to guide traffic, and local access will be maintained outside the construction zone.

Church Street Bridge in Ajax

The City of Pickering also announced that the Town of Ajax is undertaking its Church Street Bridge Rehabilitation project, which may affect traffic flow and routes for residents in neighbouring communities, including Pickering.

The Church Street Bridge (Bridge 18) over Duffins Creek, located 60 meters North of Highway 401, was constructed in 1960. The roadway bridge is now in need of maintenance and repair, as indicated by lifecycle and condition assessments.
