Clarington plans $175,000 study on waterfront development

Clarington is preparing to hire a consultant to prepare a report on increased public access and tourism opportunities along the waterfront over the next 30 years.

A municipal staff report following a mid-May Planning and Development Committee meeting, has recommended the funding of some $175,000 for the Clarington Waterfront Strategy Report.

Clarington’s shoreline stretches some 34 kilometres along the edge of Lake Ontario and spans Courtice, Bowmanville and Newcastle – three growing areas with unique identities, said a council report.

This updated vision for the waterfront will look at how new development can enhance the waterfront by supporting sustainable, barrier-free access to the lakefront with high-quality amenities and parks.

In 1992, Clarington created a Waterfront Strategy with a vision to increase public access and ownership of lands along the lakefront from three to 30 per cent.

The Waterfront Strategy consulting contract is the first comprehensive update since 1992 and builds on Clarington’s successes while aligning with other relevant plans including the Clarington Strategic Plan, Official Plan, the 2020 Lake Ontario Shoreline Management Plan and active transportation initiatives, said the report.

Courtice, Bowmanville and Newcastle have their own identities and aspirations for updating the vision for how new development can incorporate sustainability and resilience, barrier free access and deliver high quality built form and parks.

The Waterfront Strategy will incorporate the opportunities presented by the plans being created for the Courtice Waterfront Plan and proposed Port Granby Nature Reserve.

This consulting contract is for the preparation of concept plans for the Bowmanville and Newcastle waterfronts and an integrated plan across the entire waterfront which is connected by the Waterfront Trail and linked back into the urban cores by the local trail systems.
