Clarington says cases of abuse, assault on officers rising

Clarington is reporting a recent increase in the amount of aggressive and potentially dangerous behaviour toward its Municipal Law Enforcement Officers.

Instances include where officers have been assaulted while performing their duties, said a municipal statement issued yesterday.

“These actions will not be tolerated and have resulted in serious legal consequences for the offenders,” it said.

The statement said Municipal Law Enforcement Officers play an important role in the community. “They ensure that standards are upheld and rules followed, which can often be accomplished by educating the community about our various by-laws.”

It said officers follow the Municipal Law Enforcement Policy to ensure that the process is transparent, consistent, fair, and unbiased.

“Please show your appreciation for our Municipal Law Enforcement Officers while they serve the community and keep us safe,” said the statement.
