Clarington bylaw officers being threatened, abused and harassed

The Municipality of Clarington has yet again reported rising incidents of abusive behaviour towards its enforcement officers, and said such instances have resulted in serious legal consequences for offenders.

“Recently, there has been an increase in instances of aggressive, inappropriate and abusive behaviour toward Clarington’s Municipal Law Enforcement Officers. These actions will not be tolerated and have resulted in serious legal consequences,” said a municipal statement issued yesterday.

It said Clarington’s Municipal Law Enforcement Officers play an important role in maintaining a safe and vibrant community. They investigate and enforce municipal by-laws such as parking, property standards, zoning,  signs, noise, licensing and more.

“Municipal Law Enforcement officers and staff are committed to educating the community about local by-laws and resident responsibilities. Officers follow the Municipal Law Enforcement Policy to ensure a transparent, consistent, fair, unbiased, and effective process for enforcement. It’s about protecting and enhancing community safety while ensuring the local standards we have for our community are upheld.

“Please show respect and appreciation for our Municipal Law Enforcement Officers while they serve the community and help keep us safe,” the statement said.
