Construction has begun on a new all-purpose trail and connection to Second Marsh, according to Oshawa Councillor Brian Nicholson.
The current waterfront trail that travels east on Farewell Street and Harbour Road was scheduled to be closed permanently from the beginning of this month.
This closure is to allow for the construction of new trail as the city, Durham Region and HOPA Ports are combining to build a new multi-purpose trail, which will connect to the current Waterfront Trail and will provide fully accessible and safe access along Farewell and to the Second Marsh.
Councillor Nicholson said the time line for the completion of the new trail is later this year or early next, depending on the weather.
New HOPA access route
In tandem with these upgrades, HOPA Ports is undertaking construction of a new access route to the East Wharf port lands, located near the intersection of Farewell Street and Harbour Road.
While HOPA Ports continues its construction activities, the Farewell Street rehabilitation project is expected to begin later this year. Oshawa is encouraging trail users to follow posted signage and use alternate routes during the construction period.
According to the city, the new multi-use path and trail connection are expected to significantly improve trail access, safety, and user experience in the area.
