Motorbike rider airlifted after crash with vehicle at crest of hill

Durham police say a motorcyclist is in critical condition after a serious collision in Clarington Monday afternoon.

Officers from East Division responded to the crash on Lakeshore Road, east of Stephenson Road, just after 3 pm on May 26. According to police, a black Chevrolet pickup truck was heading eastbound and crossed the centre line to avoid a parked vehicle while going uphill. At the same time, a westbound Suzuki motorcycle crested the hill and collided with the truck in the westbound lane.

The motorcycle rider, a 61-year-old man from Oshawa, was thrown from the bike. He suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital by Durham EMS. He was later airlifted by ORNGE to a trauma centre in Toronto, where he remains in critical condition.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

The Collision Investigation Unit was called to the scene and closed a section of the road to collect evidence. Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Constable Kollaard at 905-579-1520 (toll-free 1-888-579-1520), ext. 5267.
