A driver – when caught travelling at more than double the permissible speed limit – told police that “it got away from” him.
DRPS Traffic Services said a car on Baldwin Street and Duffs Road in the Town of Whitby was clocked speeding at 164 in a 80kmh zone on Wednesday.
“I thanked the driver for stopping and he said, it got away from him,” said a police tweet.
It was determined that the car was a friend’s, and that the driver was not licenced. Licence suspension and car impounded, said the tweet.
When questioned how could an unlicenced driver be suspended, DRPS Traffic Services clarified that they believed this driver’s licence status was ‘unlicenced’ meaning it hadn’t been reinstated or was expired.
A suspension is registered with the MTO, that impacts the record and prohibits drivers from driving for a period of 30 days in this case. Further reinstatement fees apply, police added.
