As schools have started up again, DRPS have increased traffic enforcement to highlight speeding and safety violations in school zones.
Police divisions across Durham Region are actively addressing traffic safety concerns in community safety zones, with a particular focus on areas near schools. Recent enforcement efforts have resulted in several drivers being charged for speeding and other infractions in zones with a 40 kmh speed limit, police said.
The ongoing enforcement is part of the region’s ‘In the Zone’ traffic safety initiative, which focuses on reducing risks for students returning to school. This initiative reinforces the responsibility of drivers to prioritize the safety of children and adhere to traffic laws in community safety zones.
Speeding in School Zones
North Division officers reported multiple charges issued to drivers exceeding the speed limit in community safety zones in Brock, Scugog, and Uxbridge. Officers emphasized the importance of following posted limits, especially around schools.
They posted an image of a driver going 111 kmh in a safety zone.
Repeat Offenders
East Division Officers, who serve Clarington and Oshawa, stopped a driver who failed to stop at a stop sign near a school. Notably, this driver had previously received a ticket for the same infraction at the same location two years ago.
