Durham air quality index at High Risk, schools on alert

Durham Region Health Department said the Air Quality Health Index for Durham Region yesterday (Wednesday June 7) was 7 – High Risk.

It urged residents to reduce or reschedule strenuous outdoor activities. Children and the elderly should also reduce activity.

People with lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people and people who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by wildfire smoke, it said.

“Consider staying indoors, especially if you are feeling unwell and experiencing symptoms.”

Schools on alert

The Durham District School Board (DDSB) said yesterday evening that it has continued to consult with Durham Region Health Department as circumstances have evolved.

“Based on updated forecasts, all schools across the DDSB will have no outdoor activities on Thursday,” it said.

The DDSB will provide daily updates for the remainder of the week.

Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) has recommended that students be kept indoors for recess and lunch today, as it anticipates similar recommendations will be in place as Wednesday.

It said school ventilation will continue to be adjusted as required. Portable HEPA units are being used throughout DCDSB schools.
