GM invests $280mn to build next-gen ICE trucks in Oshawa

Oshawa has welcomed the announcement by General Motors (GM) of an investment of $280 million in next generation truck production.

Mayor Carter was “thrilled” to welcome GM Canada’s announcement that they will invest a further $280 million in the Oshawa Assembly plant to build GM’s next internal combustion engine (ICE) full-size trucks.

With this investment, GM has committed more than $1.4 billion in Oshawa since 2020. These investments further solidify Oshawa’s footprint in the transformed automotive industry of the future and ensure that GM manufacturing operations and thousands of quality jobs remain in Oshawa, said a city statement.

In November 2021, the Oshawa Assembly Plant reopened, producing the Chevrolet Silverado pickup. Today, production at the Oshawa Assembly Plant has increased to three shifts. Since reopening, GM Canada has created 2,600 new manufacturing jobs in Oshawa and thousands of indirect local jobs, it added.

“We are proud that Oshawa-made products are supporting GM’s transition to an electric, autonomous and highly connected future, with sales that are setting industry records. We look forward to continuing Oshawa’s longstanding tradition of automotive innovation and global leadership in advanced manufacturing,” said Mayor Carter.
