Durham invests in 52-unit affordable rental housing project

The Regional Municipality of Durham yesterday announced an investment of $3.5 million towards affordable housing.

This investment will help fund a new 52-unit rental apartment building in Bowmanville being developed by Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation on land made available by the Municipality of Clarington, said a statement.

This is part of a larger project that also includes 32 home ownership opportunities provided by Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area. This partnership between the Municipality of Clarington, Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation and the Region of Durham will create a total of 84 new units to serve residents at various income levels, it pointed out.

This investment into affordable housing is part of the region’s commitment to initiating the development of 1,000 new affordable rental housing units by 2024, as per At Home in Durham, the Durham Housing Plan 2014-2024

“Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home, and this new development in Bowmanville is a step towards improving affordability and access to housing in our community. Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic and the current housing market, the Region of Durham remains committed to initiating the development of 1,000 new affordable rental housing units as part of our 10-year Durham Region Housing Plan,.” said John Henry, Regional Chair and CEO, Region of Durham.
