Durham offers free food, shelter to Brock ice storm victims

The Region of Durham has set up an emergency centre for storm relief in the Township of Brock, where residents in need of a warm meal or additional support due to the storm and power outage can visit.

Brock had declared a state of emergency following damage from freezing rain and ice accumulation from recent storms, leaving many residents without power (see related stories below).

Durham Region authorities are responding to the storm damage and have advised residents to contact their insurance providers to determine if storm-related expenses and losses are covered.

Emergency Centre

The emergency centre is located at the Beaverton Royal Canadian Legion at 517 Mara Road in Beaverton. Social services will be available to provide support. Free hot meals will be served starting at 5 pm on Friday, April 4, and will continue throughout the weekend. Meal service is scheduled as follows:

  • Breakfast: 9 to 11 am
  • Lunch: 11:30 am to 3 pm
  • Dinner: 5 to 7 pm
  • Weekend hours of operation at the centre are from 9 am to 11 pm

Waste Management

In addition, Durham Region has announced that the Waste Management Facility in Brock has reopened. Residents whose properties have fallen branches or trees due to the storm are advised to prepare their brush for the seasonal leaf and yard waste collection. Collection will begin on April 7 for the townships of Brock, Uxbridge, and Scugog.

Brush must be securely tied in bundles up to one metre long and 76 centimetres wide, and no branch should exceed 10 centimetres in diameter. Temporary acceptance of storm-related yard waste will also be available at Durham Waste Management Facilities in Oshawa, Scugog, and Brock, with standard fees waived for dedicated loads until further notice.

Temporary bins for storm-related household waste have been set up for Township of Brock residents at the following locations:

  • Foster Hewitt Memorial Community Centre, 176 Main Street, Beaverton
  • Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre, 91 Elliot Street, Cannington
  • Sunderland Memorial Arena, 20 Park Street, Sunderland

Residents are asked to place any food waste resulting from the power outage in their green bin for regular curbside collection. Overflow material may be placed in clear bags or cardboard boxes next to the green bins on collection day, with the restriction that green bins cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms.

Regional Roads

Regional crews are working in cooperation with municipalities to clear roads of debris from the recent storms. Authorities have reminded residents that if traffic signals are without power, intersections should be treated as all-way stops, and they should proceed with caution.

Residents can report problems with traffic signals by calling the Region of Durham Works Department at 311 during business hours, or at 905-576-9991 in the evening, on weekends, or on holidays.
