Durham policeman charged for failing to render medical help

A Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) officer has been arrested and charged by the DRPS Professional Standards Unit with Failing to Provide the Necessaries of Life.

It is alleged that in March, while attending a call for service, he failed to render medical assistance or first aid to a person in medical distress, said a police statement issued yesterday.

The person was left in the care of a family member who later sought medical assistance. The person was transported to, and subsequently released from, hospital.

The DRPS maintains accountability with supervisory oversight which includes proactive reviews of calls for service. During one of these reviews, an investigation was commenced into the alleged criminality, said the statement.

The male, a 23-year member of the DRPS was charged. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.

He was released on an undertaking and is currently suspended from duty with pay.

The statement did not provide any further details.
