Durham’s music sector contributed $162 million to GDP

Durham Region’s music industry is experiencing significant growth, according to the recently released Durham Region Music Industry Analysis.

In 2023, Durham Region’s music industry generated $162 million in gross domestic product (GDP), contributed $110 million in labour income, and supported about 4,895 full-time-equivalent jobs. These figures encompass direct, indirect, and induced economic impacts, highlighting the industry’s substantial contribution to the local economy, said a region statement.

To further support and develop this burgeoning industry, Invest Durham, in collaboration with the Canadian Musicians Cooperative and the Town of Whitby, is launching a series of free networking and workshop events titled ‘Beyond the Music’. The first session, ‘Business Skills and Branding’, is scheduled for June 5, from noon to 3 pm at the Centennial Building, 416 Centre Street South, Whitby. Participants will have the opportunity to network and attend one of two concurrent workshops:

  • Workshop 1: Prioritizing Brand Values when Releasing Music Commercially
This session offers an in-depth look at a current indie artist’s release plan, sharing real-world experiences and insights encountered during the preparation for an upcoming album release.

  • Workshop 2: Making Sense of the Numbers – Know Your Worth, Grow Your Work
Designed to help participants understand the financial aspects of the music business, this workshop covers income tracking, expense management, and basic financial statements, empowering attendees to make informed business decisions.

‘Beyond the Music’ is open to both established musicians and professionals in Durham’s music scene, as well as newcomers eager to join. Registration is required and closes on June 2.

These initiatives are part of Durham Region’s broader strategy to leverage the opportunities identified in the music industry analysis, aiming to grow and strengthen the local music industry through targeted support and development programs.
